Off The Rails is Dad Saves America’s first mini-doc, which tells the story of a mother who allowed her son to ride on the New York City subway alone at just nine years old. Lenore Skenazy is a loving mother whose young son Izzy just wanted the opportunity to ride the train by himself, to experience the freedom and a taste of adulthood.
However, when she published an article in the New York Sun sharing her experience, she was quickly labelled by the media as the “World’s Worst Mom.” When she joined media outlets for interviews, they would almost always propose a rhetorical question asking her how she would feel about the worst case scenario.
Izzy made it home safe time and time again, just as Lenore made it home safe every day once she started walking to school alone at the age of five. Something has changed since she was a child and we believe it is something worth reconsidering.
Lenore is currently the president of Let Grow, an organization promoting childhood independence and resilience.
Come along for a ride as we explore her unique take on parenting and what we all could learn from it.
