Earlier de Toqueville described the South as barely awake economically. At first sugar, then rice, then indigo were the South's big exports. Before the cotton gin it took an adult slave all day to seed one pound of cotton. Early cotton gins could de-seed 50 pounds of cotton a day. After that demand for cotton and slaves to plant, weed, and pick it took off. Soon a gin could de-seed a ton of cotton a day. That made cotton king and saved a hateful institution that nearly died before 1794. Soon after that cotton was the South's main export.
