This was a very important lesson. The Islamists and socialist /communists are using each other to destroy freedom around the globe. I am not phobic, as you said it's just incompatible cultures. BTW there are 50+ Muslim countries where this religion can be expressed.
Great episode! Also, the episode You Were Lied To About Iran. If been reading more about the 1970's. So watch The Free Press interview 'So He Founded The Revolutionary Guard. Now He Wants To Destroy it'. At the end of the recording he was not challenged at all which was frustrating but here is my summary of the hour: So this guy, Mohsen Sazegara, was radicalized against his then-current Iran Shah-led government throughout the 1970s in his public school and later at university in Chicago. By age 22, he joined the “no kings” and “out with the fasciitis” revolution and was recruited by the resistance to form a militant group. The leaders of the movement seemed really savvy and nice (Khomeini and his crew) , provided a sense of community and a sense of belonging and purpose and promised a new utopia. Their slogan was “resistance was the solution”. “They were the “solution” he went on to mention several times during this interview.
During this time I was a young child living in the USA and sitting next to my dad as we were glued to watching the high energy US Open tennis match between Jimmy Conners and John McEnroe. Little did I know that the 1978 Camp David Accords were being brokered by President Jimmy Carter over 13 days of intense negotiations, establishing a historic peace framework between Egypt and Israel. The agreement resulted in two frameworks leading to the 1979 Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, where Israel withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula in exchange for full diplomatic relations.
This acknowledgement of Israel must have angered the Shi'a Islamist that had combined with the Iranian Marxist-Leninist guerrilla group (OIPFG) and the Freedom Movement of Iran (FMI). In order to get the rest of the Iranian population to join the revolution, they decided it was best to use non violence tactics in order to elude the enemy. Before they took over, they strategically moved to a (what they considered permissive) western country where they could manipulate and maneuver freely and spread their message/movement via media and activism. This place was Paris!
Back in their Muslim country, they formed training groups/leadership programs that would provide tool kits for civilians to overthrow their unwanted “King.” In mass, the people stopped paying taxes, stopped following laws, ignored authority, walked out of jobs/schools, graffitied streets and created as much chaos as possible. College campuses became ground zero and the students turned on those not considered allies and eventually held hostages. Is this playbook familiar?
This massive Islamist uprising worked and the government leaders were forced to leave and the revolution won. The coup was complete and the “solution” occurred as the new government in waiting took over. President Carter ordered Operation Eagle Claw to send Delta Force in to save American hostages held siege by the protestors, but the effort was an epic failure and the USA was to be forever coined as the Great Satan and Israel the Little Satan.
To sum up the 1977–78 shift; as repression waned slightly in the mid-1970s, mass protests grew, allowing the FMI and religious groups, ultimately led by Ayatollah Khomeini, to mobilize against the Shah, culminating in the 1979 Revolution.
As this young man, Mohsen Sazegara, approached age 30 and began to wake up, he realized this “resistance community” was not as nice as he thought and what they were creating was not the promised utopia. It was a state controlled hell with no freedom. The new Shia militant group, Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) that he was brainwashed into creating had now become well-funded, violent and not what he envisioned (this reminds me of ANTIFA here in modern day US). The elimination and takeover of all western civilization and to abolish anything Jewish and Christian values based was the ultimate goal and hidden doctrine. He had inadvertently helped to create a fundamentalist death cult militia that was only getting started; thus, “globalizing the intifada”.
Also happening in history at that time: 1978 to 1980s Paris was considered the "high-water mark" of French Marxism, with a strong, albeit uneasy, alliance between communists and socialists in government and the big city, university class. Also at this time Russia was still the USSR under Stalin-esk communist rule and they decided to attack Afghanistan. Before the 1979 Soviet invasion, Afghanistan was a developing monarchy, and later a republic, experiencing relative stability, modernization and social reform. Just like Tehran in Iran, the 1960s and early 1970s saw the city of Kabul flourish as a cultural hub with women in universities, tourism along the "hippie trail," and growing, although infrastructure remained limited which highlights the Urban vs Rural Divide.
Iran under the monarch Shah was experiencing Persian prosperity, rapid modernization (including opportunities for women) and western cultural influence in its major cities with the more rural communities feeling isolated and unsure of the advancements. Similarly in Afghanistan while it was known as the "Paris of Central Asia," featuring modern dress, education for women, and diverse social freedoms, about 85% of the population lived in rural areas, largely engaged in subsistence agriculture.
All this ended in Afghanistan with the 1978 communist coup. Following the April 1978 Saur Revolution, the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), a Marxist-Leninist party that took control of Afghanistan (sounds like exactly what was happening in Iran). The government was led by Nur Mohammad Taraki (president) and Hafizullah Amin, who initiated radical, unpopular reforms. This government later requested direct Soviet intervention, leading to the full invasion in December 1979.
Carter was president from 77 to 81--was he like Biden weak? Were these two takeovers coordinated to happen at the same time and accelerated due to outrage over the US, Egypt and Israel peace talks? I call this the chaos cult coups of 1978 and 1979

If you don't the far left crazies will win (and they will never stop) and they will continue to impose either Islamic or Communist ideology on us.
