You're missing the point a bit, I think, at least as it applies to those seeking fundamental changes in the architecture and operation of the American national government.
The Founders feared above all else, the power of the mob which, driven by purposely manipulated emotions, could be used by a few to subjugate the many. They therefore vested all electoral power in "the people" (originally only white men of property) and placed their elected representatives beyond the direct and immediate reach and retribution of the the electorate (House, elected every two years, President every four years, and Senate only fully replaced after 6 years). The States-appointed Senate was to act as the "saucer" in which the boiling hot "tea" of the People's House would cool, losing its power to damage and take down the entire system. The French Revolution, beginning just a few short years after the American Constitution was ratified, showed just how much a full understanding of human nature informed the founding of the United States.
The communists and their "socialist" dupes therefore wish to undo the Founders' brilliant product and place the levers of power DIRECTLY under the control of the electorate. Of course, an educated, politically astute "vanguard" will be necessary to represent and execute the wishes, expressed or implied, of the masses. From there, it's an old, dismal, and deadly story.
The source of the problem lies in allowing leftists to take over academia. Obviously, that's not the only issue -- Hollywood and the MSM make their own contributions to the current revolutionary fervor. And there are certainly things that need fixing economically and politically, which I believe the Trump administration is addressing as best it can (given the knee jerk opposition they receive from the Dems). However, if there's one thing I had to point to as primary cause, it's the lack of an adequate civic education leading up to college. By the time they enter university, their Marxist professors deliver the coup de grace: a lights out kill shot to the head.
The unstated end goal of socialism is to make everyone a subject under a World Brain, benevolent, all knowing computer system. Watched over by machines of loving grace as depicted by Huxley or Wells.

We are not owed a republic, we are owed a republican form of government (Article IV, Section 4). The people were not citizens of a republic back in the day.
Today, all "US governments" are democratic. This was not done by a mandate of the people, it is a product of the bankruptcy reconstruction post-Civil War. The reconstruction was partial, a new corporation was spun up to re-present District of Columbia, after which states, counties, municipalities were incorporated over the course of generations, common law offices were shut down, and living Americans were unlawfully converted to citizens (legal fictions) and induced to carry out all personal affairs in commerce, which is a foreign jurisdiction with respect to men and women.
The people are not citizens, never were intended to be. A sovereign by definition is not a citizen. The only lawful way for someone to become a US citizen is the Naturalization process. Did you complete that process? I did not.
District of Columbia, the states, counties, and municipalities, being incorporated, are inchoate; i.e. partially formed. There is no land in those entities. There are no living people in those entities, only commercial fictions. It is semantically wrong to conflate men and women with US citizens. Yet we are educated to do so without a thought.
D.C. is not even owned by the American people, nor are any of the many sub-franchises chartered by D.C. Why do you think the people speak, and all levels of government ignore our mandates?
I don't want to be a subject of a corporation, let alone a foreign-owned corporation. Do you? I have no stake in that entity. D.C. only wants to siphon my natural wealth to securitize its debts, saddle me and my progeny with paying off its next bankruptcy - which will come as surely as the previous bankruptcies did.
