School Sucks! Here's Why.

1 min read

In this full episode of Dad Saves America, John sits down with a radically different kind of educator. Mike Yates is the Senior Managing Director of Network Strategy at the Reinvention Lab of Teach For America. He was raised by a single mother who taught him the importance of education. However, he also learned from a young age that education, at least as it’s currently understood, is fraught with flaws.

Mike knew there had to be a better way to get through to kids. Through experimentation he has come up with some radically unique teaching methods. From his idea that teachers shouldn’t speak for more than seven minutes in a class to his “School Sucks” catchphrase, Mike is ruffling feathers and revitalizing the industry. As a matter of fact, he was so far off the reservation that when he first applied for a job with Teach For America, he was kicked out of the interview.

Mike’s stories include his teacher who took a stand for his students, showing him how great teachers could be; a teacher who accused him of plagiarism because he wrote a paper so well, she assumed he couldn’t have written it himself; and an experiment with radically different teaching methods, where he gave one student the tools he needed to teach himself how to read.

Join John and Mike as they explore the future of education and the impact it can have on your kids, and the next generation of our country’s education at large.
