I "followed my heart" in 2002. Moved out west and started working in a Montessori charter--a booming industry. I became a Montessori teacher, mom and so on. I've gone through school with my kids. I'm going to start teaching English Language Learners in a public school this year. I'm looking forward to applying my Montessori principles and passion for literacy.
I get what you mean about the dysfunction. I think the image of angry woke student mobs is the cringiest part of the system. In my personal practice, I've undergone a deep personal transformation in order to practice positive discipline. Positive discipline involves a level of self mastery and conscious communication that's effective. This is the aspect of schooling that I would like to see. It's a big ask, because it requires each person to undergo a very deep personal process. Probably not gonna happen.
