I sat down with Oren Cass, founder of American Compass and former domestic policy advisor to Mitt Romney, to unpack why he believes America’s decades-long pursuit of free trade has backfired—and why tariffs might be the key to reversing the damage.
Glad to hear Cass's comments. I'm not sure if I find the libertarian story satisfying, but I am sure that society is not satisfied with it. We need guys like Cass to be working on strong, competing stories.
You ran into some controversy around 1:10. Should a country have an industrial policy? I think there are separate answers for four more precise questions: who will make better choices (government or private)? who is more likely to practice self interest contrary to the public interest? which system will improve or decay over time? and which system is more likely to attract people who will game the system?
